Gold Coast Indie Film and TV Network presents Hazel Phillips.

The Gold Coast Indie Film & TV Network will open this year on March 21st with sheer excitement to announce a very special guest that has contributed to the industry of TV and Film and is classed as our very own Betty White no other than the amazing Hazel Phillips. This is going to be a great opening where we can get up close and personal with Miss Phillips as to how she started her career and as to what she is doing now as she is not slowing down.

Hazel Phillips has appeared on television since its inception. Her many credits include the original Beauty and the Beast and The Bramston Show. Her own talk show, Girl Talk, was the first midday show on television and ran daily for four years making her the most popular female in the country, during which time she won gold and bronze Logies.

Since then, she has appeared in every branch of the media – TV, films, theatre, cabaret, radio and journalism.

Hazel has written, starred and appeared in three musicals of her own, as well as thirty other musicals and several movies. In the year 2000 she wrote a one-woman show that ran for two hours, tracing the life and times of Marilyn Monroe, entitled Marilyn and Me, which she performed in numerous venues.

She has appeared in several plays for Queensland Theatre Company, including leads in The Circle, Pride and Prejudice, Shakespeare’s Henry V and The Merry Wives of Windsor directed by Geoffrey Rush.

Hazel was awarded the OAM in the 2005 Queen’s Birthday Honours for her contribution to television and the entertainment industry. She continues to entertain. In 2008 Hazel Phillips wrote a autobiography Black River Bright Star. It will be a pleasure to have her on board we shall have a Q&A as to her life.

Gold Coast Indie Film and Television Network presents
China Brothers Productions’
(SCREAMFEST (L.A.) award winning film) Crawl

Wednesday 30 November, 6.30pm
The Arts Centre Gold Coast.

The Gold Coast Indie Film and Television Network (GCIFTN) event, on Wednesday 30 November invites you to join them for the final (GCIFTN) event this year! Featuring another great line up of guests at The Arts Centre Gold Coast, including Paul and Ben China (China Brothers Productions), Hot Tomato’s Paul Homsey (Homsey and Flan) and special guest Councillor Susie Douglas and an after party that is ‘picture perfect’ – this is one end of year event that you won’t want to miss!

Special guest and 2012 mayoral candidate, Councillor Susie Douglas (Surfers Paradise) will be joining in on the festivities and would like to share some of her visions for the Gold Coast, especially for the local arts and film industry.

For opening entertainment GCIFTN are pleased to announce the return of new a-cappella ensemble Champagne. Their vibrant eclectic a-cappella sound, represents a style of singing in four to seven part harmony. Champagne surprised the audience with a new program at the Flood Relief Concert with Popera at Runaway Bay earlier this year, but also at SingFest 2011 and more recently at Light The Night at Broadwater Park. The ensemble will begin its set with a Love Song from the Gold Coast.

And now for the ‘piece de resistance’ of the final GCIFTN event for 2011, the most talked of local films, made right here on the Gold Coast just one year ago - Crawl by the China Productions. Twin’s Ben and Paul China, have already won three awards at SCREAMFEST L.A. including Best Director (Paul China), Best Cinematography (Brian Brehany) and Best Actress (Georgina Haig). This is an exclusive opportunity to discuss the film with Ben and Paul which would not have been made possible without the assistance of the GCIFTN.

Crawl is not based in gritty realism and purposely avoids the docu-drama style that seems to populate many Australian productions. The film is a well-crafted and cinematic thriller, that just happens to take place in Australia (identifiable only by the accents, the occasional word of dialect, and perhaps some scenery). It is a universal story that withholds references to time, dates, and locations. Crawl could, essentially, take place anywhere, and therefore aims for global appeal. Ultimately, Crawl is a lesson in suspense. The film relies heavily on tension, atmosphere and striking characters that Hitchcock (Rear Window, Psycho) and Martin Scorsese (Shutter) audiences are able to invest in. Influenced by the works of Alfred Island, Mean Streets) and the Coen Brothers (Blood Simple, No Country for Old Men), Crawl aims for both intelligence and entertainment, and will hopefully linger in the mind of the viewer long after the final credits have come to an end.

English director Paul China graduated from the University of Gloucestershire in 2003 with an honours degree in Film Studies. During this time he focused and excelled in scriptwriting, and was also a leading contributor to the Students Union newspaper. After penning numerous short stories, and completing his first novel, he moved to Australia and embarked upon a successful career in film journalism. As a senior writer for eminent publications in Brisbane, Sydney and Perth, Paul produced first-rate reviews, interviews, and news columns to readers nationwide. Along with his twin brother Benjamin, he formed the company China Brothers Productions in 2007. Consequently, his screenplays began generating interest in both Australia and the USA. Crawl, a low-budget suspense thriller, marks Paul’s feature debut as both writer and director.

Crawl will be screening at both the Brisbane Indie Film Festival and then the Gold Coast Film Festival at Birch Carol and Coyle (Australia Fair, Southport).

The panel Q&A will again be conducted by the lovely Maria Lewis - Entertainment Reporter for the Gold Coast Bulletin and Paul Homsey to discuss is triumphant acting debut!

As this is the last film network of the year and as it is getting close to Christmas the GCIFTN will be kicking on with an official after party back at Picture Lounge Bar and Dining.

Bookings are essential for this last GCIFTN event and for the after party.

Unearthed takes New York award

The next S.T.A.R.S. Filmmakers Networking Evening in conjunction with Gold Coast Indie Films will have as their guest speaker award winning screenwriter/director, Dr Peter Yaxley. His self-funded feature film was awarded the Best Foreign Film Award at the New York Hoboken Film Festival. This is one of the world’s most recognised film festivals, with 1500 film submissions from around the world. Only around 80 are accepted and more than 15,000 people attend the festival each year. The murder mystery, Unearthed, was set in Tenterfield a town of 3000 people on the northern border of NSW and took nearly five years to make. Dr Yaxley said he was proud the film Unearthed had not only been accepted for screening, but had won the judges’ approval. It was shortlisted for three awards; Best Foreign Film, Best Screenplay and Best Actor for actor Anthony Jaeger. Filmmakers, producers and actors who had won Emmy and Academy awards made up the judging panel.

FOR more than three decades film-making has been a passion for the ex-Royal Flying doctor who is now based on the Gold Coast. Dr Yaxley is the first to admit that creating Unearthed was a long and arduous process. Although shooting on location took only six weeks, as the script-writer, director, producer, financier and editor, Dr Yaxley played multiple behind-the-scenes roles.

Unearthed also starred the late veteran actor Lucky Grills, who is famous for his characters in Bluey; the ’70s TV detective series and later in ABC’s The Late Show as “Bargearse”. Grills died in July 2007, just a few months after acting in the film, which was his final screen performance. “I’ve dedicated the film to Lucky,” Dr Yaxley says. After filming ended it took nearly three years to take the movie through its long post-production process, which he accomplished almost single-handedly.

This will be another great speaking event that is sponsored by the Arts Centre Gold Coast and Caroline Russo Media. King of Mykonos to Attend Gold Coast Screening!

Australian comedy icon, star, co producer and co writer of The Kings of Mykonos: Wog Boy 2, Nick Giannopulos will attend an exclusive advance screening of the film and participate in an audience Q&A session on Monday May 17 at 6.30pm at Australia Fair Birch Carroll and Coyle Cinemas on the Gold Coast. This will be Nick Giannopoulos' only Queensland Q&A event.

Fans and cinefiles can purchase tickets for $12 from Australia Fair cinemas from today (or at www.eventcinemas.com.au with a $1 booking fee) or can win tickets via a giveaway promotion on 102.9 Hot Tomato. Tickets will also be available for sale on the night. The screening is the second quarterly event screening which forms the Gold Coast Film Festival Sneak Peek program and is presented by Australia Fair Shopping Centre, Australia Fair BCC Cinemas and 102.9 Hot Tomato.

The Kings of Mykonos: Wog Boy 2: heralds the return of Steve Karamitsis (Nick Giannopoulos) alongside Frank (Vince Colosimo) in a story that takes out heroes from one Greek paradise (Melbourne) to another (Mykonos) in order to reclaim a family inheritance.

"The Sneak Peek program is an important way for the Gold Coast Film Festival to interact with its members and supporters throughout the year at times other than the annual event. We always try to include special guests at these events and to promote Australian films where possible. This film is particularly exciting to be involved with because the original film The Wog Boy, released ten years ago, was a huge Australian box office hit taking over $13M. I personally am very excited to hear Nick Giannopoulos talk about the journey between the two films over the last decade, to learn what inspired the follow up film and to hear his thoughts on being the creator of one of Australia's most successful film franchises". Casey Marshall Siemer, Festival Director GCFF10.
